Jennifer Lopez has formally submitted divorce papers to separate from Ben Affleck.
She filed the paperwork herself, without an attorney, on Tuesday (August 20) at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, as confirmed by several media outlets, including the BBC.
Lopez handled the filing pro per, indicating she did not use a lawyer, according to reports from TMZ.
Variety notes that the date of separation listed in the documents is April 26, 2024.
The filings do not make clear if there was a prenuptial agreement in place, as per the BBC’s findings.
This suggests that any income earned by either Affleck or Lopez during their two-year marriage could be considered joint property.
Lopez has also chosen to forgo spousal support and requested that the court deny any such support to Affleck as well.
The couple, known popularly as ‘Bennifer,’ first captured public attention in the early 2000s after meeting on the set of the 2003 film Gigli.
The media quickly spotlighted their relationship, leading to their engagement within the same year.
Despite their high-profile engagement, they called off their wedding in 2004 and eventually ended their relationship.
In 2021, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance, leading to a quick Las Vegas wedding on July 16, 2022.
They followed up with a more traditional ceremony in Savannah, Georgia, on August 20, 2022.
Interestingly, Lopez filed for divorce exactly two years after their Georgia wedding, according to a report by CNN.
The couple had been surrounded by rumors of a potential split for some time before the divorce was officially confirmed.
This divorce marks Lopez’s fourth marriage dissolution, her previous being with singer Marc Anthony, and it is the second for Affleck, who was formerly married to actress and “Daredevil” co-star Jennifer Garner.
Affleck and Garner share three children.
